Education-Portal.com - Where to Find Free Math Courses Online


Taking a math course doesn't have to be expensive. There are many colleges, universities and other educational institutions that offer free math courses online.

1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (mit.edu)

There are nearly 100 free math courses available through MIT's innovative OpenCourseWare project. Most of the courses consist of lectures, slides, problem sets, assignments and other resources to assist in self-study. Registration is not required.

2. University of Massachusetts, Boston (umb.edu)

The three free calculus courses offered at UMass offer comprehensive instruction in everything calculus. The downloadable courses include multiple lessons, suggested problems, reading assignments and much more. Registration is not required.

3. College of Eastern Utah (usu.edu)

The College of Eastern Utah's Mathematics Department provides access to two different math courses that can be downloaded for free. Both courses cover a wide range of topics. RealPlayer is required for the Quantitative Reading Course, but registration is not.

4. Dixie State College of Utah (usu.edu)

Dixie State College of Utah recently began a pilot program that provides free downloads to two excellent math courses. Course materials include notes, exams, and other resources that offer extensive coverage of various topics. Registration is not required.

5. Open University (open.ac.uk)

The UK's Open University offers a wide variety of mathematics and statistics courses online. The courses are free to everyone regardless of location and include many different activities, tasks and assignments. Registration is not required.

6. Carnegie Mellon University (cmu.edu)

The free Statistics Course available online through Carnegie Mellon's Open Learning Initiative is comparable to the full semester course taught on campus at the university. Course materials include text, virtual simulations, interactive learning exercises, tests, and more. Registration is not required.

7. Temple University (temple.edu)

Members of the Temple University Mathematics Department have designed a COW (Calculus On the Web) Library for the purpose of learning and practicing calculus. The library contains a wide range of books on calculus, algebra and number theory. Registration is not required.

8. Whatcom Community College (whatcom.ctc.edu)

Whatcom Community College offers a PDF version of their Trigonometry Unit online. The 20-page PDF aimed at beginners includes an introduction to trigonometry, explanatory text, and problem sets with answers. A free version of Acrobat Reader is required to view the document.

9. Harvard University (harvard.edu)

This 45 minute video lecture from Harvard University's Professor Benedict H. Gross and Professor William A. Stein explores various mathematical theorems and cubic equations. The video can be viewed using free versions or RealPlayer, QuickTime or Windows Media. Registration is not required.

10. xyAlgebra (xyalgebra.org)

Professor John C Miller of the City College of C.U.N.Y is the creator of xyAlgebra software. The copyrighted software, which allows you to practice and learn algebra, can be downloaded for free. Premier features include interactive instruction and practice problems. Registration is not required.
