Education-Portal.com - 10 Colleges and Universities Offering Free History Courses Online



A formal history course allows you to properly delve into a particular time period. If you have the desire for knowledge but don't have the money for a campus-based course, there are still many different learning options available to you.

1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (mit.edu)

There are literally dozens of history courses available through MIT's OpenCourseWare project. Most courses feature lecture notes, videos, suggested reading lists and other learning materials. All of them are completely free. No registration is required.

2. University of California, Berkeley (berkeley.edu)

Every semester, the University of California at Berkeley offers free webcasts of select courses and events with live viewing and on-demand replay capabilities. There are quite a few history courses--all of which can be viewed with an Internet browser (Explorer, Netscape, etc.) and a free version ofRealPlayer. No registration is required.

3. University of Notre Dame (nd.edu)

Notre Dame's OpenCourseWare (OCW) Pilot Project is a growing collection of free online courses. In addition to publishing numerous courses focused on the human condition, the university offers several free history courses. The courses include readings, lectures, assignments and much more. No registration is required.

4. Western Governors University (wgu.edu)

Renowned online educator Western Governors University offers free liberal arts and information technology courses through their OpenCourseWare project. There are also quite a few history offerings at this time. Courses are easy to follow and are split into multiple modules for convenience.

5. College of Eastern Utah (ceu.edu)

The College of Eastern Utah makes course materials available through an open content license. There are currently two free history courses courtesy of the college's Department of History. Courses include study guides, lectures, slides and movies. No registration is required.

6. University of Washington (washington.edu)

The Educational Outreach program presented by the University of Washington has a number of free online courses that are available to people around the world. There are currently three history offerings. Each course includes an introduction, three to four self-study modules, quizzes and a conclusion. No registration is required.

7. University of Massachusetts, Boston (umb.edu)

The free history course available through the University of Massachusetts' OpenCourseWare project was developed by award-winning professor Spencer Di Scala, PhD. The course includes lecture materials, readings, and more. No registration is required.

8. Monterey Institute for Technology and Education (montereyinstitute.org)

The AP United States History Course courtesy of the Monterey Institute for Technology and Education is designed specifically for students preparing to take the College Board's Advanced Placement United States History test. The course includes 80 lessons full of interactive and multimedia presentations. No registration is required.

9. University of Utah (utah.edu)

The University of Utah's OpenCourseWare project is still in its initial stages. At this time, the university only offers one free history course. The course is split into several different units for easy study and includes reading lists, notes and more. No registration is required.

10. Utah State University (usu.edu)

Utah State University offers a number of free courses through the school's OpenCourseWare project. Most of the courses are not history related, but there is a History of Utah Course that may be of interest to Utah residents and history buffs. The course includes readings, assignments and more. No registration is required.
